HOW TO APPLY METAL LEAF~Metal leaf on acrylic photo stand panels~

Using 4 types of leaves: Aluminum, Silver, Reddish and Bluish brass.
Draw your design with special medium on acrylic panel. Then apply leaf onto where medium is to create metal leaf design.

Here is an example by our art supply adviser and the instructor of this class.

NOJO MASAYOSHI is an art supply expert. He is also a young artist who works on metal leaves as a material.

Mr. NOJO is telling students about what kind of material metal leaf is.
Students will be able to select 2 types of leaves from 4 colors for their artworks.

There will be 4 surfaces to work on as we use 2 acrylic panels this time. You can create certain solidity by changing design or image on each surface. Also we will challenge unique expressions for acrylic material mixing metal leaves with color pigments.

Metal leaf is extremely thin, only about 2 microns.
Open the package, pick out leaves one by one from the pile with Leaf chopsticks.
In the package, a thin paper is placed between leaves to be put together with a leaf when pulled out from the pile carefully.

Still, a little bit of skill is required for pulling out the leaf by chopsticks.
For this time, we have prepared a special paper called “AKASHI-GAMI” for beginners.
As “AKASHI-GAMI” is waxed on surface, it will fit easier. Also it prevents wrinkles when putting onto the surface.

Now, let’s check the example by the instructor.

Use masking tape when creating straight lines.
Apply medium and wait for it to dry.
Apply a metal leaf with AKASHI-GAMI, rub it with cotton for sticking.
Metal leaf is so sensitive that it will be blown away or bended with breeze. You must be very carefull even with your breath when handling it.

After learning from the example, everyone started working on practice panel before making their artworks.

Remove excess leaf gently by brush after sticking foil on the medium.

We have prepared special medium for leaf application to express various shapes and colors.

Practice is over!

Now, since we are familiar with the characteristic of metal leaves, we will begin with working on the actual acrylic photo stand.

A schoolgirl joined our academy with her mother. She was focusing on handling the very delicate material.

They were all into working with excellent enthusiasm & concentration almost forgetting about the time.

「I want to try different expression…」
「How do I retouch here a little bit ?」
「How do I improve the composition and the combination of metal leaves?」

Many questions came out as the session goes on.
Mr. NOJO tried to answer their questions as much as possible, helping students to complete their best artworks.

Good thing about the Academy is that you can communicate with the instructor while working.
Find out skills & techniques those you will never know when working alone.

It is our pleasure for you to start understanding materials deeper and have more interest in creating art works after attending our academy program.

A piece with taping technique & pigment coloring is in progress.
Looking forward to see the completion!

Completed!

After about 2 hours of working, their acrylic stands are completed.

Works.

What do you think about the academy this time?
Although they were using the technique and materials, it is very interesting to see each piece has its own different styles.
Elaborating color of leaves and layering of panel, created colorful and deep works.
You can see the certain gorgeousness from the metal leaf!

It is very challenging to handle the delicate metal leaves.
However, every student finished their works with delight after the difficulties.
